JAMESTOWN -- This past weekend the Barker Track teams competed in the Section 6 Track and Field Championships. Two Barker athletes were crowned Section 6 Champions and earned the right to compete in next weekend's State Championships in Caladonia-Mumford. Tyler Scheving won a convincing victory in the 800 meter run, while Eliza Dewart captured victory in the 200 where the judges had to go to a photo finish to call the winner. Dewart also earned a spot in the state meet for the 400 meter dash by tying the school record and earning a second place finish.
Alexandra Gancasz broke the school record in the 400 hurdles on her way to a third place finish. Also breaking a school record and the league record while finishing third was the girls 400 meter relay team of Alex Gancasz, Savanna Gancasz, Bree Sutch and Dewart. Savanna Gancasz took third place in the triple jump while Corina Giannone took fourth in the discus. John Austin also earned a patch with his fourth place finish in the shotput. Running in her last individual event of her high school career, Margie Zaepfel broke the school record in the 800. The team of Scheving, Ryan Levy, Jarid Worthington and Jed Platt broke the school record in the 1600 meter relay on their way to a strong sixth place finish. Mike Lantinen, Platt, Scheving and Jordan Bender broke their own school record in the 3200 meter relay on their way to earning patches and a fourth place finish.
To this point the Barker Track teams have broken 18 school records, set two new league records, won a league championship, and had two section champions.
