Mead To Play Football For Mustangs

June 19, 2015
BARKER -- Barker Central School is pleased to announce that Josh Mead will continue his football career at Mount Ida College in Boston, Massachusetts this fall where he will major in Sports Management. Below is a brief summary of Josh’s athletic highlights as well as a comment from his Barker coach, Bill Bruning and Mount Ida College Assistant Football coach, Scott Drosendahl.
This past football season Josh earned 2nd Team All “B” East Division honors and was awarded the Character Player of the Game by Cross Training Football in week 6. For basketball, Josh was a member of the 2013-14 Barker Raiders undefeated Niagara-Orleans championship team and this past season Josh was selected as the Niagara-Orleans Sportsmanship Award recipient for boys’ basketball. In the spring, Josh was a key member of 4 undefeated Niagara-Orleans championship track & field teams and one of the top throwers in the league.
Comments from the coaches:
“We are very excited for Josh. As a coach it is very rewarding to see an athlete set the goal of playing college football and then seeing him reach his goal. Josh was able to do this through hard work and passion for the game. He will be a great addition to the Mount Ida Football Program.”
-Bill Bruning, Barker/Roy-Hart Varsity Football Coach
“Josh is an exciting player who leaves it all out there on the field which is evident throughout his high school film. We love guys who play physical football and impose their will on opponents. He is a three sport athlete which is something we also love to see out of incoming players. With Josh's skill set he'll translate well to our U position short for utility. A running back who will line up in all different positions on the field, can block exceptionally well, catch the ball on play action with the ability to turn up field, and can get us the dirty yards in between the tackles on third and short. Overall he has the winning mentality and work ethic to excel at this level in the classroom and on Saturdays as a Mount Ida Mustang!”
-Scott Drosendahl, Mount Ida College Assistant Football Coach

June 5, 2015
BARKER -- Barker senior, Sean Benoit will follow in his brother Peter’s (’10 Barker, ’14 Alfred University) footsteps by attending Alfred University this fall as a member of the tennis team. Sean has a relentless work ethic on the court and he takes the same “nose to the grindstone” approach to the classroom where he carries a 94.515 G.P.A.
Comments from the coaches:
“Sean is a coach’s dream. His work ethic, drive, attentiveness, and humility combine to make him a young athlete who is a joy to coach. Sean is one of those athletes who look for time and space outside the standard practice to further himself in his sport, seeking to learn and practice what is necessary to improve. Sean’s character on and off the court further makes him someone with whom any coach would be pleased. I expect great things from Sean at the next level, and look forward to seeing him develop in Alfred’s tennis program. It certainly has been a pleasure to coach him here at Barker.”
-Mark Scofill, Barker Tennis Coach
“Alfred University Men's Tennis Team is looking forward to Sean becoming a player on our team and carrying on the tradition of quality tennis that his brother Peter brought to the program and hopefully Sean will fill a slot for us to assist in continuing our winning tradition.”

As a player in several off season development programs and tournaments, Olivia has always pushed herself to be the best player possible, challenges her teammates to be successful, and shows a genuine love for the game. Comments from the coaches:
“Although Mitchell is a naturally gifted athlete that gets to the basket at will; it is his work ethic and competitive drive that separates him from others. Mitchell has spent countless hours during the off-season honing his skills just to put him one step ahead of the competition. Mitchell is an example of what it takes to be a successful leader. Nobody asked him to do it nor did he campaign for the position. His peers simply looked to him to lead. I am very proud of all that Mitchell has accomplished at Barker and I look forward to seeing him produce for Alfred State.”
-Dave Carson, Barker Athletic Director and Varsity Boys Basketball Coach “I’m excited about the fact that Mitchell comes from a successful program in Barker. Targus Headed To Cazenovia For Swimming & Softball
June 11, 2014
BARKER -- Barker Central School is pleased to announce the Barker’s Brooke Targus will continue her swimming and softball career at Cazenovia College this fall.
Comments from the coaches:
"Brooke was a returning veteran for our team in 2014. She was one of our captains and definitely our defensive leader on the field. Brooke has a strong aptitude for the game of softball. She always knew what was going on and was a great communicator to the rest of her teammates. She spent time at both 2nd base as well as behind the plate for us. Her versatility allowed us to have a balanced defensive attack this was key to our success this year. Brooke was voted to the Honorable Mention All-League team this year."
-Bill Moeller, Barker Softball Coach
"Brooke swam varsity for four years and was captain her senior year. Brooke is a versatile swimmer who excelled in all strokes and especially the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly, and the 200 individual medley. This year Brooke was team MVP."
-Mike Gendrue, Barker Swim Coach
"I am excited that Brooke will be attending Cazenovia College next year to play softball. My assistant and I have a good feeling about Brooke and we feel she can help us out. She is going to have the opportunity to play right away here. She is a great kid and we feel she is going to help us take that step to the next level."
-Christopher Comino, Cazenovia College Softball Coach
"I am very excited to hear Brooke will be joining us next year. She is going to be a great addition to the team. She is one of our top incoming freshman and with her times from High School will be our second best IMer and top butterflier."

Haight To Join Beilein At Niagara County Community College
May 28, 2014

Haight's basketball highlights include:
- 2013-14 4th Team All-WNY
- He is a three time 1st Team Niagara-Olreans All-League Player
- All-time leading scorer in Barker with 1,338 points
Haight's other highlights include:
- First Team All-WNY Football Player in the fall of 2013.
- In 2013 Haight won Section VI titles in 2 events in Track & Field. He will compete this weekend at sectionals.
- Holds 3 Barker High School Track & Field records.
Comments from the coaches:
"For those of us that know Jacob, two things really jump out and surprisingly, it is not his athletic ability. First, Jacob is the epitome of a team player. It is tough to believe the school’s all-time leading scorer in basketball also ranked 3rd in the league in assists this past season. Jacob helped lead the Raider’s to a perfect 18-0 regular season and was the co-captain of the school’s first league championship basketball team in 36 years. This team was known for their unselfish play which was led by their humble stars, Jacob Haight and Mitchell Luckman. The second thing Jacob is known for is being a friend to everyone. It is funny to see the 3-sport star talking to a 7th grader in the hallway or an athlete from another school that he just met. Jacob's charisma, charm, and outstanding work ethic will take him to great places."
-Dave Carson, Barker Athletic Director and Varsity Boys Basketball Coach
"We are happy to have Jake join the Thunderwolves program. We really feel we have one of the best players from Western New York coming in as a freshman."
-Bill Beilein, N.C.C.C. Men's Basketball Coach
