JV Field Hockey Now Unbeaten In 82 Straight Games
October 26, 2010
BUFFALO -- Congratulations to the JV Field Hockey team for a 2-0 victory at Nichols on Tuesday to complete the season undefeated at 15-0 overall. This was the 82nd consecutive game the team has gone without a loss. The current streak spans over five seasons. Kelsey Blackley got Barker on the board about seven minutes into the second half with the first goal. Liz Luckman notched the second goal about seven minutes later on assists from Meghan Menz and Brooke Bodine. Both goals were great examples of transitioning the play from defense to offense and attacking the circle hard and going to goal. Renee Levy and Caitlyn Mason shared the shutout win as each spent one half of the game between the pipes.

The entire team played extremely well. Nichols was a very tough competitor as they kept it all even at zero past halftime. Barker, not used to being pressed or held off the board like that through the first 30 minutes, responded very well in the second half as they were challenged to leave it all on the field. The girls did just that as they pressured Nichols by moving the ball quickly and getting the most out of their free hits to back up the Vikings in their own end. Barker played one of its best games of the season to close out the 2010 campaign. From the goalie out they were strong defensively, transitioned very well from middies to attack and then controlled possession and field position for most of the game.

Other proud members of the team include Lindsey Brown, Rheanne Levy, Alex VeRost, Serena Rosario, Morgan Brown, Gabby Clare, Melissa Grosshans, Renee Levy, Kelsie Engert, Madison Greenwald, Paige Fudella, Emma Duffy, Erika Moeller, Caitlyn Mason and Erin Greenwald. This is an incredible accomplishment for these 19 players, 14 of which are in seventh or eighth grade.

Barker Raiders Support Breast Cancer Awareness In Contests The Week Of October 18
October 12, 2010
BARKER -- As many of people are aware, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer has hit home in our communities, work place, fellow coaches and even some of us at Barker Central School. It affects one in eight women during their lives and kills more women in the United States than any cancer other than lung cancer. In an effort to help raise awareness and funding for scientific research, the Barker Field Hockey program has teamed up for the third year with Play 4 The Cure. Their efforts have inspired the athletic community at Barker to raise the bar in fighting this disease with the same fervor we carry on the field as we play our favorite sports.

During the week of October 18 all Barker home sporting events will support this give back opportunity of awareness and funding by wearing pink and/or passing a PINK jug during half-time or at some point during the contest. Supporters of the cause will be able to give donations to help this very worthwhile cause. There is no obligation for the visiting teams to participate, but we would like for all visiting teams to be aware of what may be transpiring during their time at Barker.

Some suggestions have been to wear PINK, pass the PINK jug during half-time, purchase $1 PINK Play 4 The Cure bracelets and personal donations from team members as well as their fans.

All proceeds for the week’s events and various efforts throughout the Barker School District during the month of October will go towards funding breast cancer research. Every penny helps. PLAY PINK! For more information visit www.play4thecure.com.
