Varsity Field Hockey Team Headed To States
November 10, 2012
PENFIELD -- The Barker Varsity Field Hockey team can add another title to its arsenal for this season - Far West Regional Class C Champion. On Saturday morning the Lady Raiders defeated long time nemesis East Rochester 2-0 at Penfield High School to earn a trip to the State Semi Finals at Cicero-North Syracuse High School on Saturday, November 17 at 9:30 am. Barker will play the Long Island winner of the Section 8/Section 11 Regional between Friends Academy and Southampton. The two teams square off on Tuesday, November 13 to determine the last of the Final Four teams. Greene from Section 4 and Greenwich of Section 2 are on the other side of the bracket.

Kim Zaepfel scored what proved to be the game winning goal at 16:19 of the first half when a ball, sent into the circle by Makenzi Strickland at the 20 yard line made it's way to the ER goalkeeper. The ball rebounded off the keeper and towards the top of the circle where Olivia Denny got a stick on it to send it back towards the goal. Zaepfel then got a solid redirection on the ball to send it into the cage to give Barker the lead. The hard working Lady Raiders, who controlled much of the play in the first half, did such a great job passing and managed to contain the ER big ball.

Although they were on their heels towards the start of the second half, Barker managed to keep ER off the scoreboard and kept them from putting any shots on goalie Caitlyn Mason. With 6:24 left in the game Kelsey Blackley took a pass from Gabby Clare and deposited it in the goal cage to give the Lady Raiders an insurance goal. The play started just outside the Barker 40 yard line as Strickland took a loose ball in the middle of the field and turned it up field to Denny. The ball was then sent to Clare who worked past an ER defender and passed to Blackley. The Blackley goal injected the Barker team with some energy too as they were able to keep the ball in the ER half of the field for much of the remainder of the game and had a couple more great chances to score before time expired.

The win was a great team effort and the Barker midfield and defense was very impressive. Birthday girl Meghan Menz, Heather Mason, Jessica Hefferon, Strickland, Kayla Moeller and Morgan Brown all had solid performances. The win over ER was just the fourth time the Lady Raiders have managed to get by ER in 15 tries, but it was the second time in the last three years. Several of this years players were on the team that went to States in 2010 and they hope to use that experience to their advantage.

Varsity Field Hockey Headed To Regionals
November 6, 2012
AMHERST -- The Varsity Field Hockey team won a tightly contested game with league rival Akron on Tuesday night in the Section 6 Class C Finals. After a scoreless first half it was Makenzi Strickland's crossing pass near the Barker bench that made it's way to Melissa Grosshans who shot the ball behind the Akron keeper at 27:26 of the second half. Barker came out firing on all cylinders in both halves, but was unable to get anything going in the Akron circle until the goal. The Lady Raiders would have several chances from that point on to add to their lead, but were turned away by either the goalie or the goal posts. Barker would hit three posts in the game as there was a flurry of activity in the attacking circle in the second half. The passing game of Gabby Clare, Olivia Denny, Kayla Moeller and Heather Mason was a key to pushing the play up the field and creating offensive chances.

In addition to the assist on the goal, Strickland did a fine job at mid-field. Jessica Hefferon made the game saving play in the second half as she cleared a ball from entering the Barker cage. Morgan Brown also played exceptionally well in her mid-field position as did Meghan Menz at link. Kim Zaepfel was aggressive in the circle and made some nice plays on the left side.
