Director of Instructional Services/Special Education - Letter to Community

Dear Barker Families,
Since November, my days have been filled with meaningful work and steady progress in strengthening our special education programs and supports. A significant focus has been on connecting directly with teachers, students and families, including observing and visiting students in out-of-district placements to ensure their needs are being met and to maintain strong lines of communication.
Facilitating CSE and CPSE transition meetings has been another key priority, helping to guide collaborative, student-centered decision-making and ensuring smooth transitions for our youngest learners entering school-age services. These meetings, along with ongoing collaboration with outside stakeholders, have reinforced the importance of teamwork in supporting student success. Equally important has been the continued focus on relationship-building with both staff and students. Establishing trust and maintaining open communication has helped foster a supportive and responsive educational environment.
Internally, I have worked closely with staff by supporting professional development opportunities, conducting team meetings within the Special Education Department, and contributing to the English Language Arts Targeted Skills Group. These efforts are aimed at building capacity, sharing best practices, and ensuring alignment across programs.
Behind the scenes, attention to budgeting and meeting NYSED data collection deadlines has ensured that our programs remain compliant, well-resourced, and positioned for continued growth.
Overall, this work reflects a commitment to supporting students, empowering staff, and strengthening systems to better serve our school community.
