  • Old Fashioned Days

Posted by Debra Dearborn at 12/19/2011 12:10:00 PM
Throughout the months of November and December students at Pratt Elementary have been learning about what life was like 100 years ago.  Themed units included information such as that shown on the bulletin boards on display in the hallways to give students a glimpse into life in the early 1900's.

December 16th was "Old fashioned Day" at Pratt Elementary.  Students took part in coloring activities, made clothespin dolls, button whirligig toys and paper maché ornaments, as were made in the early 1900's.  Many classes also toured the 1911 Building and played with tinker toys, Lincoln logs, rag dolls and marbles, as those were the popular toys during that time.

Third grade students learned what it was like to receive a Christmas stocking 100 years ago. Unlike the gift cards and mini-electronic games that are contained in the fancy decorated stockings of today, children used to create their own stockings to hang and would often find them filled with much simpler treats. Since fresh fruit was difficult to afford, many children received one special piece on this day, along with nuts, candies and very small toys such as marbles or spinning tops. Our third grade students, along with the help of many parent volunteers, sewed and decorated their own holiday stockings to hang.

Sixth grade students also created a gingerbread replica of the 1911 Building.  They did an outstanding job!  We hope you enjoy the photo gallery below:

More information will be forthcoming as events are planned.

  • Birthday Celebration Kickoff a Huge Success

Posted by Debra Dearborn at 10/18/2011 3:50:00 PM
Students representing grade levels 5 through 12 travelled to Barker Bicentennial Park at Huntington Beach at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18th.  Each student gathered token lake stones symbolic of the many stones used to assist in the construction of the building.

The event follows the recollection of Hazel Huntington Gardner, a 1914 graduate of Barker noted in Lorraine Wayner’s book titled, Welcome to Somerset.  Gardner recalled that in September 1911, the students were excused at 1:00 PM and taken to the lake in horse drawn hay wagons.  There they picked up small lake stones which were later embedded in the concrete decoration on the north and south sides of the building.

Students returned to Barker Central School aboard a horse drawn wagon driven by alumni Norm and Becky Atwater where they were greeted by the Barker High School Band and Chorus, as well as students from all grade levels.  After introductions by Board of Education President, Gordon Kenyon and Superintendent Roger Klatt, everyone joined in the singing of the Alma Mater.  Students then presented the lake stones to Barker alumni, who added them to the basket, as was done originally 100 years ago.  Mrs. Lorraine Wayner spoke briefly about the history of the school district.  The event was closed with music performed by the Band and chorus.
